General Managers and Fitness Managers have important responsibilities many of which revolve around member interaction and satisfaction.

A key performance indicator (KPI) is retention. The retention KPI measures how many members stay each month and is an essential factor that correlates to the quality of service provided.

One well-researched service that is designed to maximise retention is the induction or new member journey’. In general, a new member will join, be given an induction/programme which may include a health and safety tour and health check, then book in again in 4 weeks for a check up/reprogram. This usually continues, in the system 2-3 times after which the member has no more scheduled’ gym time but instead would ask for advice on an ad-hoc basis.

The system has a few drawbacks including monitoring and logistics such as who, when, how; with most gyms having their own unique method. The purpose of this article is not to propose a new method for the member journey’ but offer some ideas on how to monitor the quality of service given.

Methods of assessing quality:

How can Managers measure and monitor the quality of service provided during an induction?

The answer would be to choose a selection of assessment tools that can be easily used group wide, allowing for variations on processes and still allow for a system that is objective and logical.

Below are a few examples of such assessment methods:

Method

Description

Pros

Cons

Shadowing

Visual inspection of how the induction is done while a member is being shown around.

Assessor can see and hear the content, structure and delivery of session

Staff will be on best behaviour and is therefore unlikely to show common style

Simulation

Assessor acts as virtual member

Allows for a closer view that will highlight eye contact, behaviour and confidence

As above.

Nervousness can cause mistakes

Mystery shopper

(There are also professional mystery shopper companies that provide this service)

Pre-warn a member or experienced gym practitioner to keep track of key criteria during induction.

Staff will not be aware they’re being assessed and will be more likely to act as normal

Quality of mystery shopper evaluation. Will they be objective? Are they trained to know what to look for?

Arranging suitable candidates and times

Anti – Big brother’ attitude

Self evaluation

A checklist can help staff to know by rote what to do and when even allowing for varying member types.

Empowers staff to make own judgments on performance

Honest self evaluation is not easy.

Staff might emphasise good points and downplay bad points

Exam

A written or oral test or to ensure all aspects of induction process are understood.

Objective.

Easy to assess

Doesn’t mean that they’re knowledge is being used during the induction.

Nervousness

Need to change questions each time

Group assessment

1 staff to induct, 1 staff to be the inductee, 1 staff to be the assessor

Group work can highlight the differences in approaches.

Staff can control their progress

Takes up extra time for 3 staff.

Likelihood of subjectivity and favourable assessment is high.

Video

Record the session and playback

Objective.

Useful to see one’s own style from another perspective

Nervousness.

Acting abnormally

Equipment costs

Case study/Practice

The fitness staff would ask a member to help with putting together the ideal induction which is then performed in full to a manager

Allows staff to take control and practice their style to a flexible process.

Training/practice makes perfect

When will there be time to practice? Who would want to go through many inductions?

Staged’ and therefore useful to make things right, but will they be consistent day in day out?

Feedback sheet

Member fills in sheet immediately after induction

Simple to administer

Criteria checklist.

Members see we care and their feedback is important

Relying on information from non-professional for feedback.

Consideration for timing of quality control is also important. Which day, which time, how often?

Working on a bi-monthly model a framework for quality control could be based around the following questions:

1. Were they on time?

2. Did they meet and greet?

3. Did they explain the induction procedure?

4. Were they suitably dressed and clean?

5. Were they friendly and communicative?

6. Did they provide a tailor made tour and introduction that was appropriate to your needs/wants?

7. Were H&S aspects explained?

8. Was the health check informative and accurate?

9. Was their knowledge and advice accurate?

10. Did they do a demo on the Power Plate and ask for contraindications?

11. Did they book you in for a further appointment and give an appointment card?

When you think about your situation, have you noticed that they all start to blend together. They all tend to have similar ways of losing weight, yet they are so revolutionary? I will tell you that after 25 years of bodybuilding and helping hundreds of people lose weight, there is one thing that stands out above all others, burning body fat….
What Do I mean?

Look at it this way. You have tried how many times now? Two times, three times, more? If your searching for the best way to get that fat off for good, then I would listen to what I am going to say next. We all tend to try to find the easy way out, I know how that feels, I did it too. I tried to find a supplement that would make me lose weight faster, have the fat melt away, and it never happened. I tried all the fat burners, weight loss products and even tried to starve myself and it never worked. Don’t get me wrong, I did lose weight, initially.
In the beginning, you will lose weight, you will see a temporary reduction in your weight loss program. However, you will not continue losing more weight when reducing your calories, or taking more fat burners or some fancy named nutritional product. Here is what I see in the magazines that are fooling the public into using these products. This next few sentences will hopefully guide you away from the clever marketing and into the only way to lose fat once and for all. I will list a few of the incorrect sentences and after that I will show you a list of why it is a BIG FAT LIE…
Ready?

Our new revolutionary fat loss product “may” help you lose weight.
This product will increase fat loss by 400%
Use this fat burner and increase thermodynamics in your sleep
So now you have the bunk, and here is what they are really saying.
“May” ( This means it might work, no guarantee, and that the “revolutionary” product is a complete scam. If that were true, everyone would be using it and you would hear at least a few friends tell you they found some thing that made them lose weight and you would be taking it as well.)

Increase fat loss by 400%? Really? If that were true you could lose a few pounds of fat DAILY. You cannot burn that fat in any environment. So they are trying to prove to you that you can lose a few pounds of real fat per day? If that were true like the so-called HCG diet, people would be telling you that they lost “FAT” not “WEIGHT”… You must know the difference.

Increase fat burning in your sleep! Your body is at rest, so even if it did increase fat burning, that may be true, however, it would not be enough to show any significant difference in the way you look.
WOW, so now what? The only way to truly burn body fat, is to burn it off with exercise. Even before you reduce your calories, you need to establish a baseline of calories that is not too low that your body thinks it is starving itself. If you don’t and follow the clever HCG diets that recommend 400-600 calories a day, you will lose. You will lose weight, and maybe 2 pounds a day. It just will not last and your not burning off the fat. Fat burning needs to have to components to be burned off, increase heat and oxygen. The increase heat comes from exercise and the oxygen comes from moving the body at a slow or medium pace that increases heat, oxygen and that is your best chance to lose weight and keep it off.

On Wednesday, Melissa Rycroft announced that she is pregnant. Former star of The Bachelor dating series and Dancing With the Stars will have no problems getting her great body back after the baby.

Training for Dancing with the Stars required eight-hour practices, seven days a week, which left Melissa trim and tonedbut exhausted. After the show she took a break and not is back to her regular exercise. She now runs two or three miles four to six days a week and strength-trains at home. Instead of dieting, Melissa and her husband made simple changes, including having most meals at home instead of in restaurants.

Melissas typical day consists of:

Breakfast
Sugar-free instant breakfast shake and an apple

Lunch
Chicken sandwich with raw carrots and a glass of orange juice. Melissa also likes to have something sweet so shell have a jell-o pudding pack.

Snack
Almonds

Dinner
Grilled chicken, mashed potatoes and some green beans.

Dancing with the Stars dancing pro Julianne Hough, 20, reveals her secret to staying a size 0, “I eat only until full.” She also eats 5 small meals a day and cuts out beloved carbs and sweets during the shows season. She says, however, that she doesnt restrict herself too much.

These celebrities pretty much stick to the 5 Factor Diet. This diet has been created by a trainer, Harley Pasternak and has been growing in popularity. Celebrities like Jessica Simpson and John Mayer have been using this plan.

The 5 Factor Diet is all about fives: 5 meals a day, 5 workouts a week each made up of 5 exercises.

At each meal, you should have:

1. low-fat quality protein
2. low- to moderate- glycemic index carbohydrate
3. fiber
4. healthy fat
5. sugar-free beverage

Type of exercise is shifted every week: strength training, cardiovascular, core movements repetitions, sets, resistance level, and rest periods.

Believe it or not, the way you shop can go a long way to determining whether your weight-loss story has a sad or happy ending.
How frustrating would it be, having adhered to your plan, enjoyed successive losses only to succumb to temptation that could so easily have been avoided?
One of the golden rules to successful weight-loss is to work out where the traps lie and navigate your way round them. Few however treat the weekly shopping trip as a potential pitfall.
So here are the five top tips to ensure that your shopping habits promote, rather than destroy your efforts.
Make a list and stick to it, plan your meals for the week and ensure that you purchase all (and only) the ingredients you need. Ensure that your menu is varied and that you have plenty of healthy snack options so you dont get tempted to raid the biscuit barrel or goody cupboard. In addition to food choices, give some thought to what youre going to drink as this too can prove to be a stumbling block.
The time you shop is crucial never ever go to the supermarket when you are hungry – this is a sure fire way end up with a trolley full of calories laden goodies or at least a fatty snack. The best time to go is straight after youve eaten, preferable breakfast as this is when you are at your most resilient so youre more likely to stick to your plan and make diet friendly choices.
Make things easier on yourself by learning the geography of your store, know which aisles are home to the barred foods and steer clear of them. If you have to venture down an aisle of temptation make sure that you remain focused on why you want to lose weight, this will make it easier for you keep control of your iron will!
Get into the habit of reading true labels, pay attention to fat and sugar content and take little heed of the better for you and lower fat type labels. Better for you doesnt necessarily mean that the product is good for you it is more likely to mean not as bad for you as the standard version, similarly lower fat means just that lower, not low.
Is your shopping trip a family outing? If so you need to go it alone. Children and partners end up loading the trolley with an array of nutritionally deficient rubbish. Not only will this trick benefit your waistline and theirs but it will also see your shopping bill diminish significantly.
Give your next shopping trip the thought it deserves and youll be handsomely rewarded for your efforts.

Are you ready to hit that local gym around the corner? After all those years of staring at other peoples fit and fabulous bodies, do you want to be the one to be stared at? Or has the doctor or your significant other refused to see you, till you tip the scales at the wrong end? Well, whatever the reason, if you are headed towards a fitness goal there are a couple of things that you need to understand before you start working those abs and pumping up the cardio:

1. Talk to your doctor about your planned workout. Is there any kind of exercise that you must avoid because of your medical condition? Are you overweight because of reasons other than a lack of exercise and an unplanned diet? It is important to remember that certain thyroid conditions may also affect your weight. It is better to be safe than sorry.

2.Check your daily diet. It helps if you maintain an honest diary of your food intake for a week before you start working out. This way you will be able to plan your meals to compliment your workout. This will help you to achieve your weight goals more effectively.

3. Set realistic goals. There is nothing that can kill your exercise routine faster, especially in the initial stages, than having an out of reach goal. On the other hand, if you achieve targets that you have set, it will spur you on to continue with your gym routine.

4. Eat a well balanced diet. Include the right mixture of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fibre and water to give you the energy to workout, as well as to carry on with your regular activities. Talk to a dietician if required, and find out how to manage your diet more effectively.

5. Make friends in the gym. If you find a buddy to team up with you during your workout it will be fun for both of you. But, be careful not to encroach on anyone’s private space

6. Talk to the trainer at the fitness club. Your trainer is the best person to help you chalk out a good exercise routine. They will help you get the right balance of cardiovascular exercise as well as weight training, which is so important to get a fit body. You need help to plan your weekly workout schedule and to understand the proper way to use the equipment. There are many special tips that only a trainer will be able to give you after seeing you workout.

7. Remember to warm up before you start your exercising otherwise you might injure yourself.

8. After your workout remember to relax for ten minutes before you start to go home.

9. If at any time during your workout you feel exhausted, take a break. Push yourself, but not till breaking point. You don’t want to get hurt, do you?

So go ahead and get into shape before the holiday season with a well planned fitness routine and healthy eating. Just remember that you will not see results overnight. It takes time for the fat to move.

I’m sure you’re aware that there are lots of different ab exercises that you can do, but which ones work the best? What if your goal is to burn fat and get flat & firm abs, but not necessarily to have a really strong stomach?

If you want a flat stomach, but don’t care about having a super strong midsection, then you may need to change how you’re thinking. In fact…

You’ll Probably Get Better Results If You Completely Stop Doing Ab Exercises

To get a flat stomach you need to focus on burning fat off your body, not developing strong stomach muscles. Realistically, whenever you do situps or crunches all you’re doing is working a small muscle and making it a little stronger every time. This really doesn’t help your body burn fat.

Instead of doing small ab exercises, try changing your focus to bigger weight lifting moves. Now I know you’re probably not used to hearing this, but lifting weights is one of the best ways to crank up your metabolism and melt the fat off your body. But I know what you’re thinking…

Won’t I Build A Ton of Muscle and Look Like a Body Builder?

The simple answer to that is NO! Here’s the deal…

Touching free weights won’t automatically make you inflate and become a body builder lookalike. Men build muscle much faster than women and it’s takes extreme dedication and hard work for them to get big.

Lifting weights will help your body build lean muscle which in turn increase your metabolism and practically forces your body to shed fat, even while you’re not working out! Weight lifting is hands down the easiest way for women to lose body fat and get a flat stomach, so go for it!

Start out small by doing light weight-lifting exercises like squats, dead lifts, bench press, and rows. If you don’t know how to do these exercises, find someone who does and learn from them!

A nice bonus from doing these exercises is that they also engage the lower back and stomach muscles, which will help your midsection look firmer than ever. Plus your body will be healthier because of it, giving you better posture and a stronger core.

I would challenge you to try it out for a couple months and see if you like the results. I find weight lifting to be much more fun than jogging anyway! I think you’ll like how you look too, building lean muscle gives your whole body a tighter look and will help you with any ’saggy’ spots on your body.

Megan Fox is in amazing shape but she had to work for it, especially for her role in Transformers.

Megans trainer had her do a time compressed body-weight routine. This is very similar to what other

stars like Brad Pitt, Robert Downy Jr., and Daniel Craig are doing.

Megans workout routine relied heavily on planks. According to her trainer, planks are by far the

best move for women to get sexy, flat abs like Megan.

Then she would spend 15-20 minutes doing a circuit that involved knee ups, leg swings, and ball leg

lifts. After which she would finish off with 30 minutes of cycling. High Intensity Interval

Training is great for getting lean and burning fat.

Megan also used vinegar detox diet. This consists of detoxing with vinegar shots, straight up, to

lose weight. Fox said that the vinegar detox diet “cleanses out your system entirely,” and claims it

rids her body of water weight associated with menstruation. This diet is supposed to suppress

appetite as well as cleanse digestive organs and speed up metabolism.

However, experts warn against this vinegar detox diet. Dietician Lucy Jones said, “As attractive as

it sounds, there is no magic pill, lotion or potion for a quick fix to weight loss. “The body,

including the liver, is a well-oiled detoxing machine, which will not be improved by vinegar, whether

it be organic, apple cider, unfiltered, or your bog-standard malt vinegar.”

Now keep in mind, she only did this for her movie role; on regular basis Megan Fox tries to maintain

a healthy diet. She uses a combination of healthy foods that keep her appetite under control, spiced

with a great workout routine that helps keep her stunning body in shape.

The model tries to reduce her daily calorie intake and follows a diet that involves avoiding grains

and refined sugars, also known as the Paleo Diet. This diet is all about eating veggies, fruits, and

foods that contain lean proteins. Amongst other foods, Foxs diet includes eggs, vegetables, and

almonds, which are said to help control the feeling of hunger and are a well known source of healthy

fat.

Getting firm & flat abs is not an easy thing to do. It takes discipline and hard work to achieve, since you need to get your body fat percentage so low in order to get really flat abs. If you’ve been trying to get there with less than desired results, you may need to change your focus.

If you’re stuck in the mindset that you have to do hundreds of situps, crunches, and other ab exercises every day to get firm abs, then it’s time for a wake up call. Since your abdominals are a small muscle group, working them so hard doesn’t burn the calories or rev your metabolism enough to make a huge difference in your body fat level.

While it’s good to focus on your abdominal muscles, you should take a step back and look at the bigger picture. In order to get nice flat abs that have that ‘firm’ appearance, you need to learn how to lose abdominal fat and lower your body fat as much as possible. And to do this, you’ll need more than just ab exercises.

You may even want to stop doing ab exercises altogether until you start seeing some results doing things the right way. Start to focus more on your diet and the other exercises you do like weight lifting and sprinting.

To get some quick wins and see fast results, one of the best things you can do is cut back on sugar as much as possible. Sugar is known to spike your insulin levels and promote fat storage, which obviously won’t help you burn off your body fat!

And instead of running on the treadmill every day to burn calories, ditch your cardio routine and start lifting weights, heavy and hard. By doing big moves like squats, dead lifts, and bench presses, you’ll be breathing plenty hard. Plus lifting weights will give you exponentially more long term effects that will help you lose pounds even when you’re not working out!

Those who haven’t tried exercising on a pilates reformer think that there can only be one exercise move done on the equipment. Well, that notion is wrong. There are several pilates reformer exercise movements which help you trim down and which tone specific body parts. If done continuously at regular intervals, the pilates reformer workout can help you attain the perfect body that you want to achieve.

Read on some pilates reformer exercise below and try doing the movements yourself. You can try asking your instructors about this workout and have them perform it with you so you can do it the right way.

Pilates Reformer Exercise: The Side Lying Leg Exercise

In a leg pilates reformer exercise, you have to position yourself on the carriage in a left side lying position. You can relax your head flat on the board or you can support it using both your hands. Next, you have to put your left foot under the foot bar in the highest position. Do the sidekick by raising your right leg and swing it in front of you.

Repeat the movement five to ten times on each leg. You can also raise both your legs as high as you can and go back to a normal position on the platform. This move also has to be done for ten times. This pilates reformer exercise can help you build stronger and leaner leg muscles.

Pilates Reformer Exercise: The Basic Mermaid Exercise

A basic mermaid move can be performed on a pilates reformer exercise. Lie down comfortably and straighten your spine to achieve a neutral position. You can place your hands on the back of your head or you can lie down flatly on the carriage. The right leg should be placed on the foot bar first and perform some “kicking” movements. After ten repeats, do the same move with your left leg. If done properly and if practiced at regular intervals, you can have longer and slimmer legs in no time.

Pilates Reformer Exercise: Getting Flat Abs

Getting flat abs can be achieved when you perform the pilates reformer exercise correctly. First, you have to pull your shoulders and grab the straps or ropes to bring your arms high in the ceiling. Raise your legs and make sure they are aligned with your hips.

The lower abdominal muscles will be energized once you do this movement. Breathe in and out while you are doing this exercise. Repeat it for several times until you feel your belly muscles tightening. If done continually for a month or so, you can get the flat abs that you desire.
